（余談）

聞くところによると，Foo FightersのDave Grohlは（共和党のスピーチ・ライターだった父親が理由で）1980年代はじめにワシントンDC郊外で子ども時代を過ごし，当時空からは核ミサイルが落ちて来て自宅の裏庭に敵国の兵士が侵入してくるといった不安を抱えていたようですが，2019年に10代の娘を学校へ車で送っていく途中，彼女から（アメリカと北朝鮮は）戦争になるのかと問われ，自分が40年前に背負っていた同じ不安を娘もまた感じていると知ってこの曲を書いたそうです。

以上の点を考えあわせ，曲の冒頭に登場する「I've been waiting on a war since I was young」を「戦争になるんじゃないかとビクついて，戦争の顔色ばっかりうかがって，今までずっと生きてきた」と訳しました。

リードでも述べたように，タイトルが「waiting On a war」であることはこの曲を理解する上で非常に重要です。「戦争」というものがいわば人間にとっての「主人」となって，それに人間が振り回されている様子がうかがえるからです。（仮にこれが「waiting FOR a war」だと戦争（が起こって欲しいと思いながら）待っている」ということになってしまいます。）
