相手の主張には欠けているところがあるのではないでしょうか？主人公に優しくするためにはヒドイ態度を取らなければならないという相手の主張もわからないではありませんが，だからといってヒドイ態度を取る人間が必ずしも相手のことを大切にしているとは限りません。
I think something is missing in the defence of the second person.  They say it's necessary to be cruel to be kind (to the narrator) and I understand the idea.  Being cruel, however, doesn't always mean the person loves the other.

** bona fide　・・・　本物の，誠実な，本当の
*** pick up oneself　・・・　倒れた状態から起き上がる，元気を出す
**** knock down　・・・　叩き潰す，倒す

（余談）

聞くところによると，コーラス部分の元ネタはシェイクスピアのハムレットだそうで「思いやりを見せるには残酷にならねばならぬ。そうすれば悪いことは起こるが，それゆえもっと悪いことを遠ざけておける（I must be cruel only to be kind; Thus bad begins, and worse remains behind.）」という一節があるそうです。

ただあくまで個人的な体験からの感想に過ぎませんが，「お前のため」と言ってヒドイ態度を取る人間が私のことを本当に思っていたことはただの一度もないので，この主人公もさっさとそこに気づいて相手と疎遠になった方が得策であるように思われます。
