主人公は相手の声を伝えてくれる電話に感謝しています。現在電話はどこにでもあるものなのであまりど意識に登ってきませんがこの曲が発表された1971年には電話はすぐに手に入るものではありませんでした。
The narrator thanks their phone for delivering the voice of the second person.  Now a phone is ubiquitous and we never think much about it.  In 1971 which this song was released it's not a commodity yet.

どこかで聞いた話ですが家電（landline）を解約するタイミングで一番多いのが「親が亡くなった時」なのだそうです・・・確かに。
