第一次世界大戦に従軍したイギリスの元兵士が1960年代に行われたインタビューで「クリスマス休戦」について語っていますが，自分たちと同様に，ドイツの敵兵も祖国を守るために戦っていると信じていることを知り衝撃を受けたそうです。
In an interview conducted in 1960s, a British WWI veteran talked about the Christmas truce in 1914.  He said he was shocked to learn a German soldier who they were fighting also believed they fought to save their country like him.

（余談）

お互いに「自分が正しい」と信じているからこそ「相手を正さねば」という気にもなるのでしょう。勿論戦争というものはそこに政治的な思惑が絡んで来るので話はそこまで単純なわけではないと思いますが，それでも「ひょっとして自分は間違っているのかも？」と考えるだけで何か別の解決策が見いだせるのではないかと思ってしまいます。
