この曲はベトナム戦争を歌ったもので，そこでは国の自由の名のもとに多くの命が失われました。
This song is about the Vietnam War in which many poor men lost their lives in the name of the freedom of the country.

（余談）

南北戦争の際，北軍は徴兵制を採用しましたが代理を立てたり一定の金額を払えば兵役を免れることができたらしく，そうやって徴兵を免れたなかにあのカーネギーやJPモーガンもいたらしい。
