今日は12月31日大晦日，年末ジャンボ宝くじの当選発表が行われる日です。この曲のタイトル「Money For Nothing」は，80年代のロック・スターの豪華で派手な生活を歌ったものですが，宝くじを買う人間もある意味「Money For Nothing」を求めていると言えそうです。

「FXで大儲け」「株をやるなら今」系の広告を日常的にあちこちで見かけます。「簡単」「大儲け」「裏ワザ」・・・。私の場合，蓄財能力に関しての自信が皆無なので，そのまま素通りですが，心惹かれる人も少なくはないのでしょう。なにしろ「儲かった」「これほど簡単だとは思わなかった」等々，やらない方がバカに思えてくるような話が山ほど出ています。

ただしそこで述べられていることすべて真実であったとしても，それだけで「Money For Nothing」が保証されているかというと，必ずしもそうではありません。そこには「敗者（＝損をした人間）」の見解が欠けているからです。

例えば，安く買った株を高く売って利益が出たとします。そこで得られた利益は本来であれば，その株の前の所有者（株を安く売ってしまった人）とその株の現在の所有者（株を高く買ってしまった人）が得るべきものであったはずです。したがって，彼らは損をしたことになりますが，それを自分から宣伝したりはしないでしょう。

すなわち，よほど内部に通じていない限り，我々の耳に入ってくるのは，そのほとんどが儲かった人の話だけですが，我々はともするとその点を見落としてしまいがちです。これをavailability heuristic（利用可能性ヒューリスティック）と言い，日常生活で簡単に利用できる情報によって判断してしまうことを指します。

この利用可能性ヒューリスティックは，確証バイアスと並び，我々の日常生活に深く入り込んでいます。そもそも当の私自身が常日頃からこの2つに翻弄されているのですが，来年こそできるだけここから脱却したいと願うところです。

91年に発表されたこの曲は，一般にあの天安門事件のことを扱っていると言われていますが，曲を書いたMichael Stipeは，The Quietusのインタビューで「本当に他愛もない内容の曲なのでヒットした時はちょっと恥ずかしかったが，自分の違う一面を見せられたという点で大切な曲だと思う」と語っています。

私の知っているR.E.Mの曲と言えば，The One I Loveくらいですが，確かにあの曲は明るさとは対極にあるものなので，彼の主張もなるほどと思えるのですが，仮にそうだとするとこの曲を天安門事件と結びつけたのは一体何なのか？

この曲とタイトルのヒントになったのが，中国のプロパガンダ用ポスターだと言われているようなので，おそらくその辺りからの発想なのかもしれませんが，それと同時にリードで述べたように，物事にあまりに隙がないと不安になるという心理が働いているのかもしれません。

Versace On The Floor ブルーノ・マーズ (Bruno Mars)

ミダス王は音楽で一山当てたわけですね。曲に登場する女性が「近所のかわいい子」から「お嬢様」に変わってますから。Somewhere In Brooklynに登場する女性は（おそらく）地下鉄の駅で電車を待っていましたが，それに対してこの曲では，普通シンプルな黒のワンピースでも20万円以上するヴェルサーチを着て（そして勿論脱いで）います。
I guess Bruno Mars made a fortune with his own music.  Girls appearing in his songs have transformed from 'a girl next door' to a 'well-off girl'.  In Somewhere In Brooklyn, the girl was waiting for a train in (probably) subway station.  On the other hand, in this song, the second person is wearing (and taking off, of course) Versace whose simple black dress usually costs more than $2000.

曲調が大変ロマンティックなので，ぼんやり聞いているとWhen I Was Your Manのような内容なのかと思ってしまいますが違います。結婚式に使うには多少刺激が強いような気がしないでもありませんが，だからといって不適切とまでは言えないような気がするのでWのラベルをつけておきました。

Honky Tonk Women ザ・ローリング・ストーンズ (The Rolling Stones)

曲がヒットする上で，ラジオでかかることは大変重要です。過激すぎる歌詞の内容のせいで放送禁止処分になってしまっては大打撃なので，アーティスト側としても，そうならないように細心の注意を払い，あまりにも露骨な歌詞は避けるようにするものです。
If you want your song to be successful commercially, you need to understand the importance of radio airplay.  Being banned by radio stations because of suggestive or provocative lyrics would be a huge blow to an artist.  So they take a great care not to make the lyrics too suggestive

日本語の二人称と異なり，英語における二人称「you」には性別がなく，男性に対しても女性に対しても使える上，単数形としても複数形としても使えます。
したがって，仮にこの曲の主人公がJohn Legend自身だとすると，歌詞に登場する相手は，彼の妻，娘，あるいはおそらくその両方ということになります。
Unlike many those in Japanese, the pronoun for the second person in English, 'you' has no gender.  It represents both male and female.   It also is plural as well as singular.
So if the narrator in this song is John Legend himself, the second person in the lyrics could be his wife or his daughter, or most likely both.

Ben FoldsのBrickのような曲は実話に基づいていますが，この曲も同様で，Dan Fogelbergはクリスマスを家族と地元で過ごし，そこで高校時代の彼女に偶然再会してこの曲を書きました。 以前ここでRupert HolmesのEscape (The Pina Colada Song)という曲を取り上げましたが，この曲はそのもっと切ないヴァージョンのような気がします。.
Like Brick (Ben Folds), this song is based on a true story.  Dan Fogelberg wrote it after spending Christmas Eve with his family in his hometown where he came across his high school sweetheart.  To me this song sounds like a bittersweet version of  Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes.

まるで映画のワンシーンを見ているような描写力に引き込まれました。Dan Fogelbergは歌詞に登場する女性の正体を明かしていませんでしたが，2007年に彼が前立腺ガンで亡くなった後，その本人が名乗り出てきてようやく判明したそうです。

彼女によれば歌詞で描かれていることは，彼女の眼の色（ブルーではなく緑）そして彼女の夫の職業（建築家ではなく体育教師）２つの点を除いて真実なんだとか。

この曲を初めて聞いた時，なんとなく知っている曲のような気がして，Wikipeidaを調べてみたのですが，Matt TerryがX Factor 2016で優勝したことは載っていたものの，誰がこの曲を書いたかについては記述がありませんでした。ただEd Sheeran節ですよね？
When I first heard this song, I felt something familiar.  Wikipeida tells me Matt Terry is the winner of X Factor 2016 but nothing about the songwriter.  It sounds so Ed Sheeran, doesn't it?

（余談）

クリスマスに相応しい博愛主義的なミュージック・ヴィデオを見ていると，この曲の内容を見誤りそうになりますが，歌詞を見る限り，主人公が別れてしまった相手を想いつつ，それを吹っ切ろうとしている内容のようです。

第一連に登場する「目の前のライターの炎の中で，2人の姿が燃えて行く (burning in my eyes and you and I, heated by the flicker of a lighter)」は，その前の部分から考えて，主人公が何かを激しく後悔していることはわかるものの，実際に主人公が一体何をしているのかが最初は今一つ掴めませんでしたが，歌詞の内容を考えれば，ここは主人公が別れてしまった相手との写真にライターに火を点けて燃やしていると考えるのがよいような気がします。

それはともかく，この時期にこの曲に出会ったということは，取りも直さずクリスマスにこれといった予定もない今年，己の来し方行く末をひとりじっくり考えてみろという神のお告げなのかもしれません。

Comfortably Numb ピンク・フロイド (Pink Floyd)

この曲は薬物について歌っているものと多くの人は考えているようですが，作曲者のRoger Watersによれば，この曲はそうではなく，子どもの頃，40℃以上の熱を出し意識朦朧となった時の経験を歌ったものだそうで「風船みたいに両手が腫れた (My hands felt just like two balloons)」の部分は，多少誇張されてはいるものの，両手がいつも以上に大きく見えて，それが怖かったことを描いているそうです。ただし，ここを「別の意味」に捉える人も存在します。
Many people believed that this song's about drugs but Roger Waters who wrote the song denied it saying the lyrics are about what he felt like when he was sick with a fever in his early days. At that time, he had an infection with a temperature of 105 and being delirious. （余談）

リードで述べた「別の意味」ですが，要するに「風船みたいに両手が腫れた」理由を「40℃以上の発熱」にではなく，全く別のところに求める人がいるということです。

まず真っ先に浮かぶのが「両手を酷使しすぎた」ことでしょう。では腫れあがるほど「両手を酷使して」一体何をしたのか・・・その答えは敢えてここでは詳らかにいたしませんが，そう考える人の大半が「邪心持ち」であろうことは想像に難くないところです。

Lava クアナ・トレス・カヘレ・ナプア・グレイグ・アンド・ジェイムス・フォード・マーフィー (Kuana Torres Kahele, Napua Greig & James Ford Murphy)

Israel Kamakawiwo'oleによる有名なOver The Rainbowのカヴァーにヒントを得て，James Ford Murphyはこの曲を書いたとか。ご覧の通り，タイトルのLava（溶岩）はlove（愛）と似た響きであり，そのためloveという言葉の代わりに使われています。が，lava（溶岩）と聞いて私が連想するのは別のものです。
It's said that a famous cover of Over The Rainbow done by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole inspired James Ford Murphy to write this song.  As you see, the title Lava sounds similar to love and is used in place of love.  It reminds me of something else, though.

たとえ「ラバ」と「ラヴ」の音が似ていようとも，日本においてはそれはギャグにしかなりえないと思うのですが，それをここまでロマンティックな曲にしてしまえるあたりに文化の違いを感じます。

Folding Stars ビッフィ・クライロ (Biffy Clyro)

非常に親しい人や本当に大切な人を亡くしたアーティストが書いた曲には，言語や国境を越えて訴えてくるものが少なくありません。以前こちらで取り上げたDrops of Jupiter (Train) やWhat Sarah Said (Death Cab for Cutie)と同様にこれもそういう曲です。
Songs written by an artist who lost someone very close to or they really love often have a universal appeal and comes home to us all.  Like Drops of Jupiter (Train) and What Sarah Said (Death Cab for Cutie) I posted before, this song falls into the category.

この曲はメタファーが素晴らしく，例えば「いくつも赤い風船が萎んでくみたいに見える (red inverted balloons)」は輸血用のバッグ，そして「出入り口も窓もないベッド・ルーム (a bedroom with no windows or doors)」はおそらく棺を表していると思われます。

また，日本語でも亡くなった人を指して「星になった」と表現したりしますが，この曲では，故人を「これからは折り紙で，夜空の星を折るんだろ？(You will be folding stars)」と表現しており，そのもたらすイメージの美しさに圧倒されます。

Olly Mursが出ているヴィデオの説明にYears & Yearsの文字を見て，それがカヴァーだと思ったものの，Years & Yearsの曲にそれらしい曲が見つからず一瞬悩みました。当然です。Olly Mursのオリジナルでした。      
I believed it's a cover when I spotted "Years & Years" on the description of a video in which Olly Murs was in.  I was a bit confused to find there's no such song in Years & Years' discography.  No wonder it's not a cover but his original.

False Alarm マトーマ・アンド・ベッキー・ヒル (Matoma & Becky Hill)

John LegendのOrdinary Peopleを歌い，ブラインド・オーディションを通過した後，彼女はTeam Jessieに加わったわけですが，彼女がJessie Jをコーチにしたのもわかるような気がします。2人の声が似ているからです。ハスキーで太く力強い声。下のアコースティック・ヴァージョンではそれがいかんなく発揮されています。
She joined Team Jessie after passing the blind audition singing John Legend's Ordinary People in 2011.  I think I know why she chose Jessie J for her coach.  They have a similar voice, thick, husky and powerful.  The acoustic version below clearly demonstrates what Becky has.

Jessie Jの他に太く力強い声と言えば，個人的にはJess Glynneを思い浮かべますが，彼女の声はJessie JよりもむしろP!nk姐さんに似ています。

私は声質を「線」で感じるのですが，そのやり方で両者の違いを挙げるなら，Jessie JやBecky Hillの声が若干インクが少なくなったマーカーで描いた線であるのに対し，Jess GlynneやP!nk姐さんのそれは封を切ったばかりでインクのたっぷり残っているマーカーのそれといった感じでしょうか？

私の場合，書店などに行った際にそうなる確率が高いのですが，その場合「慌てて対処したものの実際には空振りだった」ということがたまにあります。

（余談）

結婚式前日に新郎が姿をくらます・・・そうそうある話ではないと思いますが，漏れ聞くところによると，式場によっては，約１割くらいが直前でキャンセルになり，その原因のほとんどが，親族の不幸や健康上の理由などではなく「破談」なんだとか。

これを「実際に籍を入れる前に気付いて良かった」と取るか，あるいは「ここまで来て破談になった」と取るかで，その後の展開は大きく変わるような気がしますが，個人的にそのような経験がないので，果たして本当にそうであるかは不明です。

会いたいけれど現実には会えない相手に会う方法として，もっとも一般的なのは「夢で会う」というものであり，歌詞にも数多く登場しますが，これをもう一歩進めると，眠っていない時でも「妄想」で相手に会える能力（？）が身に着く場合があります。

ただし，この「能力」は使いどころを間違えると，この歌詞に登場する息子同様，刑務所に行くことになりかねません。Xメンならずとも「超能力」の使い方が難しいのは変わらないようです。

結婚式にはコレという曲で，その点については，どこからも文句は出ないと思います。ただここで取り上げたのはそれが理由ではありません。この2行が気になったからです：髪が汚れないように，ずっとおさえてやってたよ，お前がゲロを吐いてる間。この曲，ほとんどはロマンティックでキレイなのですがこの2行だけは違います。そして個人的にはそこが一番気に入っています。
This is a perfect song for a wedding.  Nobody can deny it.  These are not the reason, however, I posted it here.  It's these two lines that caught my eyes: "I held your hair back when You were throwing up."  While most lines sound lovely and romantic, these two line don't at all.  That's the part I appreciated most in this song.

数年前，ShontelleのImpossibleのカヴァーを歌って大ブレイクしたJames Arthur。それ以来しばらく話題に登らなかったものの，今回この曲がヒットしたことで再び脚光を浴びているようです。

通常ポップ・ソングでは，ひとつの同じコーラスを繰り返すものですが，この曲にはコーラスに3種類のヴァリエーションがあり，冒頭で同じloveという単語を使いながら，それぞれ過去，現在，将来を表現しています。

それはともかく，リードでも述べた「ゲロ」の一節ですが，これが日本の曲（しかもメジャーな曲）であったならまず有り得ない歌詞でしょう。J-Popに詳しくないので，適切な例を挙げることができませんが，嵐あたりが（適当です，申し訳ありません）ラヴ・ソングで「ゲロ」と言っていることを想像すればご理解いただけるかと思います。

そう考えると，文脈はいささか異なるものの，Ed SheeranのBloodstreamやMike PosnerのI Took A Pill In Ibizaを聞いた時に感じた英語のポップ・ソングの間口の広さというか懐の深さというか，そういったものをここにも感じます。

この曲には聞き覚えがあります。テレビで何度も耳にしているのですが，クラシックの曲だと思っていて，あのジャズの巨匠Cole Porterの作品だとは考えたこともありませんでした。この曲，情熱的で前向きな歌詞とは対照的に，メロディーは悲しく，それだけになんとなく恋愛というものを表現してるように思われます。曲は45秒くらいから始まります。
I knew the song.  I heard it on TV so many times and believed it's a classical one.  I've never imagined it's a piece written by one of jazz legends, Cole Porter.  Despite quite passionate and positive lyrics, the melody sounds sad and hence it feels to represent all about love to me somehow.  Song starts about 0:45.

日本語にするのは大変難しいのですが，この歌詞の白眉はやはり何といっても「My arms fold about you」でしょう。

George MichaelはLast Christmasの中で「傷ついたし気まずくて (Once bitten and twice shy)」と歌いました。私のように懲りない連中は別として，大抵の人間は，一度ひどく傷つくと，それと同じ状況を避けようとするものです。この主人公も例外ではなく，最初は相手に対して警戒していたものの，そんなことをしても意味がないと悟ることになります。
"Once bitten and twice shy," sang George Michael in his Last Christmas.  Apart from those who never learn like me, most people try to avoid being in the same situation again once they got hurt so badly.  So did the narrator.  First she tried to put up her guard against the second person but later realizes it's not worth trying.

（余談）

Siaの曲にはどことなく屈折したものがあって，それが彼女の芸風であるように思われるのですが，Freeze You Outというタイトルとは裏腹に，この曲は意外なほど直球でした。
